December 13, 2011

‘Movers’ is a corporate identity work display by Dasein Graphic Design DGD 093 students. Guided by Mr. Ong Chung Ping, it presents the corporate identity and stationery design of over 20 hypothetical courier or transportation service providers which include name cards, letterheads, envelopes, shipping documents, note pads and the like; produced exclusively for the theme “Movers”.

Unlike the traditional way of using posters to promote the event, they kept it in suspense by shrink wrapping the fixtures and fittings ranged from basin, chair, waste basket, door handle, display cabinet, poster frame in Dasein building. It had drawn much curiosity. Only two days later, the ‘Movers’ labels appeared and unveiled the suspense which took the viewers by surprise.

The exhibit was set up akin to a warehouse with corrugated boxes shrink wrapped and placed on wooden pallets which fit the bill. Some packaging boxes featuring the logos designed by the students were placed at two corners. It’s as if a shipping company is in operation. And the projector screen featured an opened box with an overview of each corporate design in display added an interesting touch to the exhibit.

Dec 23-26, 2011

Concept: To express individual spirit by designing three different characters that represents each of the team members.

In this final project exhibition, the creative team members Yvonne Lim Yee Von, Sarah Yap Yie Kah, and Lee Kok Liang designed three characters which represent their appearances or personality as a way to express their spirits. This uniqueness is apparent in the colorful poster featuring figure 3 which consists of whimsical illustration of the characters with funky animals, trees, flowers and clouds in nature; drawing the visitors into a fantasy world in children’s storybook that stimulates imagination and dreams.

Each of the character created by the team members has one thing in common - each has a large eye; the furry blue with a watchful eye; the little red chap with a compassionate look; and a meteor-like kitty with a Pinocchio nose. They were hand-sewn and held on the strings with other characters featured fruits, muffins, cookies and the like. They were dangled atop the ceiling which creating a charm of a candy land.

Most of the time was spent on sewing the characters up. They purchased the fabric locally but had to source for the particular blue furry online from China. On the other hand, they came up with the variations from the figure 3 design for t-shirts and handmade woven bags. They transferred the images onto the fabric by using paint thinner method. It took them quite awhile to test and reach the correct color combination.

While the warm yellow light set the tone, an inviting corner of the gallery serving delicious homemade pastries such as almond apple crumbles, muffins, mango & honeydew puddings, and Ribena longan. The homemade chocolate bars in orange, raisins, and almond flavors are a pleasant surprise. The team applied a classic style of label printing with paint thinner transfer, bringing to life the reminiscent retro and vintage feel to the chocolate packaging on canvas.

Three members. Three characters. Three spirits. They are one, and yet individual. Though only three in a team from idea generation, preparation, and setup, they lived up to the spirit of ‘3’ and overcame the obstacles to make this project a fruitful experience.

Oct 11-15, 2011 @ Singapore

Neighbor Program is a dialogue and collaborative research project aimed at reconnecting art and design institutions within the South-East Asian region. The objectives includes forming networks to organize exchange programmes with the emphasis on art and design, socio-cultural aspects by inviting lecturers, students, and expertise to participate, converse, and respond to different ideas; creating cultural collisions within this potpourri.

The institutions in collaboration includes Dasein Academy of Art, Lasalle College of Arts in Singapore, and SoA+D KMUTT in Thailand. This year, an exchange program was held at Lasalle College of Arts which Binus University in Indonesia was invited to join. There were five students from Dasein Academy led by Mr. Mark, Mr. Joseph Foo, and Mr. Kean Foong attended.

Facilitated by the lecturers and representatives of each institution, the student participants were divided into groups for a series of interactive activities aimed to establish cultural understanding, team building, and to foster idea exploration and creative development. Each activity was followed by a sharing and discussion session for the students to express their thoughts and ideas. They jotted down and documented the progress through sketches and photograph.

On the last day of the program, each group presented their learning outcomes to conclude a fun-filled memorable learning journey. Nonetheless, it isn’t the end of the collaborative project. The students were given a brief to prepare for an exhibition at Bangkok Arts Cultural Centre in early March 2012 for the theme ‘We Are What We Eat’. It’s a visual documentary that is worth looking forward to; a continuation and progression of the Neighbor Program.

April 25, 2011

Inspired by the momentary nature of existence in life, four Graphic Design graduates transformed the ideas of combining paper art and pastry-making into a distinctive paper café called Hour Tavern; a conceptual café designed to be expandable, stretchable and mobile to demonstrate the momentary nature of spaces and locations, in the hope of redefining the perception of paper craft from installation art form to an interactive platform.

‘Tavern’ denotes a small classic inn where lodging, drinks, meals are served. And ‘Hour’ consists of the word “our” which signifies the café is not only a rest place for the team before they move on to their next phase in life, but also a stopover for the travelers to refresh and restart their journey.

They financed the project from their own savings and the support of their family. It’s a challenge when they had to balance both ideas and production feasibility. Some design prototypes were not able to be implemented due to budget constraints, or the manufacturers were unable to fulfill their expectations. As a matter of fact, they spent majority of their budget on the paper materials due to numerous attempts in experimenting and testing the concepts until they managed to finalize and implement the design.

The paper café is expandable to demonstrate the mobility and usability of space. Everything is hands-on from invitation cards, tableware, menu board, cash register, chairs, café bar, and pastries. The café was only open three times for business though from 3pm-5pm at two locations. It’s to portray the momentary senses and the significance of living in the present moment.

The team learned from failures from the project and overcome the obstacles to make the paper café a reality. As they venture into different career paths in future, they behold the same passion in feeding their curious minds by exploring endless possibilities. Every little step in accumulating experience paves the way to a milestone; and perseverance is the only way to keep their passion and dreams, alive.

October 4-6, 2011

The curriculum of Mass Communications at Dasein Academy is designed for a dynamic and practical experience. With the objectives of putting a class into a physical setting that generates a bond among students and creates a learning community, Dasein Mass Communications department organized a 3 day 2 night camping trip to Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). It’s a learning adventure to develop personal values and team spirit, encourage group cooperation, and generate appreciation for the natural environment.

One of the highlights is the surprise visit by Jack Lim, the honorary advisor of Mass Communication Department in Dasein. The students and faculty were delighted to have him as the special guest and judge for the team building and games sessions.

The student participants were divided into five ‘family’ groups. The accumulated points from the games determined the winning team at the end. One of the key learning activities is each group had to come out with a short play in twenty minutes about family values and love. Each play was followed by comments and suggestions for improvement from Jack Lim.

As the outcome, each play had its uniqueness whereby it brought tears, laughter, humor, and drama to the audience. “It’s rather challenging to come up with a script within a short time frame when there’s no lighting, music, props, nor costume as the visual aids. Hence, the ambiance is the key to draw the audience into the play in addition to putting oneself in the role, “says Jack Lim.

Furthermore, as per Jack Lim, though acting skills are important, the control of voice volume, attention to details, body language, and the timing of dialogues are crucial too. And regardless of the winning outcome, he encouraged the students that the creative elements in a drama and their talents surpassed the importance of the points or marks.

After all the prizes were awarded by Jack Lim to the winning team and individual for their outstanding performance, they celebrated the learning experience and accomplishment with a barbecue dinner to conclude the camping trip.

Mr. Jin, course director of Mass Communications presents a token of appreciation to Jack Lim

July 20-23, 2011

In a rapidly changing society with busy lifestyle, we tend to forgo our dreams and take things that truly matter to us for granted. The objective of Back exhibition is to remind people to be true to themselves and reconcile with the simplicity of happiness. By using different mediums, the creative team presented a series of artworks pertaining to finding back one’s distinctive self and pursuing passion that truly reflects one’s inner voices.

Harry, who has a passion in fashion design, presented a piece of exquisite woolen dress. The dress, in the state of work-in-progress, was placed crisscross with strings extended from the wool at the center of the room, signified a continuity in pursuit of his dream as a fashion designer.

Kiah Eng, whose theme is teddy bears, added a heartwarming touch to the exhibition. There were more than 20 hand stitched bears of different stories in whimsical designed styles. One of the most endearing teddy bears is the largest of all. And the homemade buns featuring teddy bear is a sweet delight which received well response from the visitors.

Dino, a kidult, presented a miniature town by using origami techniques. The stories lie in a series of retro collage wallpaper that has a vintage touch; rekindled the viewers’ fun-filled memories as a child. The miniature was decorated with twinkle lights, casting a warm glow into the town; conjured up those joyful childhood days that might have been forgotten.

When it comes to recollection, Libby presented a concept about books and nature, the core imprint of her memories. There are 50 over books of different sizes and design in a personalized room. The backdrop made of hemp bags featuring a collection of books portrayed a life cycle from toddler to youth. Each of these books, arranged in the form of 回, has its charm of reminiscence.

Sean, who is passionate about photography, presented his interpretation on reflection via mix media. It’s a series of light reflection artworks made of mirrors, thumbtacks that depict diverse perception of truth; awakening the viewers’ senses to the path of self exploration and reflection.

Five different themes of artworks cultivate the relationship between the artists, space, and viewer’s perception. Each work is a surprise and has its own intuitive meaning. And each, however different, touches the heart of the visitors one way, or another.

“Grief be mine, I ask you so,

If not for you, I wouldn’t know,

How life once was and then be still,

How so precious, that death do steal.

Because that grief, won’t go away,

Learn to let it have its way.

The link to love, a precious one,

Is met with grief and still not done…” - Hope in Heaven’s Day, Arlene Dery

Sep 14, 2011

Classics, extraordinary movies with significant social and cultural messages interwoven with visual elements, conjured up vivid memories from the past that are worth to be preserved.

As such, with the guidance from Ms. Ng Ai Beng, Dasein DGD 102 graphic design students designed and produced a series of limited collection sets as one of the course projects to promote five outstanding movies by several respectable directors such as Tim Burton, Quentin Tarantino, and Danny Boyle. The featured films are ‘Pulp Fiction’,’Seven Samurai’, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, ‘Edward Scissorhands’, and ‘Trainspotting’.

The collection sets comprise of exclusive DVDs, posters, cards, concept artwork, T-shirts, calendar, bookmarks and the like. Each collection set is unique in its own way and presented in such a way that triggered a desire of having them as personal collectibles.

Both the collection sets as merchandise display and movie clips were presented in a cinematic setting which mimicked the actual movie theatres. For instance, the handmade cinema light indicators were connected to an LED light for illumination as a notification to the audience.

It’s indeed a fun-filled ambiance for film appreciation where students sat around while the selected special scenes of the featured films were projected onto the screen either in sequence or interchangeably. When the lights were off in the room and the eyes on the screen, the sound and visual stimuli were captured as if an 8mm projector was running especially when a black and white background scene in ‘Pulp Fiction’was projected on the screen; created a peculiar but nostalgic visual touch.

The special screening of the featured films not only helped the audience to grasped the storyline, but also created a crucial visual link between the promotional merchandise and the movies– how the design aspects of the collection sets interconnected with the visual and motion perception of the movies. It’s where the static and non-static collide and converge, creating a sense of intrigue in the art of visual and cinematography.

The design of each collection cleverly communicates the theme and capturing the essence of the respective movie; infuse imagination and colors into the visual feast and form the pillar of unfadable classic memories.
